In the United States there are more then 3300 men and women on Death Row. Executions are a fact of life for them and they are consigned to wait until it is their time to die. In some states the wait is longer or shorter, but without luck and hard work many of these people will eventually be executed.
Most of the people on Death Row are not innocent, but some are. They all share in common, guilty or not the fact that they are human beings in a terrible situation.
The people who generally end up on Death Row in the U.S. also share in common poverty, racial bias, geographical and political bias, inept or underfunded defence counsel. While it is not true in every case, it is true in the vast majority.
What you can do as a pen pal is to remind these men and women they are not alone. You can show even the worst or least among them the worth of human life and dignity in the direst situations.
You can learn from them as well and may be surprised at what these condemned people still have to offer as individuals.
This service is provided to offer them the opportunity to belong to a wider world then that of their prison cells, to build bridges and connections to other people and to lend comfort in a dark situation.
How you choose to interact with and approach these people is up to you. Always bear in mind though their situation. They (especially the newer condemned) have a lot to adjust to and sincerity and honesty are essential. Don’t write to them unless you feel equipped to handle the situation emotionally. You may befriend someone who will be executed.
Last of all be aware that there are those who will seek to use the pen pal connection for exploitation, be they one of the prisoners or some unscrupulous writer or reporter. We can’t prevent that, we can only tell you to use your good sense and judgement.
